True Story: I am a NYC Certified Artist — which meant that I was permitted to live and work in mixed use buildings. I had the status in Manhattan when I lived in Soho which was suppose to be a center for artists but became a fancy shopping mall. So when I moved to Brooklyn, I reapplied. The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Bess Myerson was a retired beauty queen and she decided that she would come out for a visit with the re-issued certificate. Smith Street never had such a sight. The neighbors gathered around. There was an limousine along side bombed out cars that littered the area. She was unfazed in her kitten heels (in December!) and her Nancy Pelosi style sunglasses. She entered my 2nd floor home/dance studio and she nibbled on some strawberries I set out. She had one other person aside from the driver with her. I asked why she selected me for a visit. She said that I was the first artist in Brooklyn to seek an artist certificate. She wanted to brag about it to the Mayor Ed Koch. PS: It was notarized and it did have my social security and zip code. This is a copy I received from DCA years after it was issued in 1986. Ms. Myerson had a bit of a tragic ending. she was investigated for mismanagement during the Koch Administration and arrested for shopping lifting as a senior citizen.
